Most people don't need this part. You'd rather they charge everyone more to add a part that only a few would use instead of letting just those few people get the extra part?

Q: considering the bowl has a fatal flaw with the rear of the unit open, why isn't this automatically included?

It's not a fatal flaw. One of my cats is very aggressive and he never tries to get into my other cat's feeder when she's eating. I did buy the bowl cover initially but returned it because my cat (the non-aggressive one) wouldn't use the feeder with it attached. My theory is that it amplifies the opening and closing sounds when it's on. Anyway, I have a feeder for each cat and they're great!

Tailgating can be a problem with greedy cats. There is an adjustable delay time for closing the lid, using a slide switch on the bottom of the feeder. Try a shorter delay. I don’t know of any sidewall accessories to block frontside pushy cats.
