Great replacement for the classic "nifty 50"!

A fixed 50mm lens is a very useful lens. On a full-frame body (I'm using the full-frame Canon 6D) 50mm reproduces the view the human eye naturally has; on a 1.6 crop body such as the 7D it becomes 80mm, making it an ideal portrait lens.At a fast 1.8. the Canon "nifty fifty" (Mk II) always had a place in my camera bag. Sadly I dropped mine last week, and an internal plastic lug snapped. Time for a replacement.I settled on the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM as the obvious choice. Same aperture, but some changes: it is a little shorter, has a 49mm filter ring rather than 52mm, and a metal rather than plastic mount, which should mean it is more robust. Oh, and the "Stepper Motor Technology" focusing is very quiet.I've been taking sample pictures, some of which are posted here. The first two macro shots are heavily cropped: the lens focuses down to 0.35 metres as opposed to the Mk II's 0.45 metres: an appreciable difference. the others are uncropped. The thistle and foxglove pictures taken at f1.8 show the bokeh the lens can produce. The two buildings photos are taken at f8/f9.I am very happy with the lens: it is a great replacement for the Mk II 1.8. And. like its predecessor, stunning value for money. In terms of "bang for buck", I don't think you can do better.

a force to be reckoned with - The incredible nifty fifty

being more of a zoom lens guy i decided to get my hands on this lens as the price is just to good not to.being more into the zoom lenses it did take some time to adjust to the fixed focal length and using my feet as the zoom but for the image results its worth it.REMEMBER its under£100!- its light and compact- wide apreture of f1.8- image quality is competes with the canon L series- THE PRICE!!!it has an all plastic, almost toy-like body top to front to back but as long as your not just lobbing it about theres no reason to be concernedIt is a good lens for low light photography, especially indoors. Note that the filter thread does not rotate on autofocus, so you can happily use a polarising filter. This is a great introduction to photography with a prime lens.

Excellent

What can I say about this lens. It’s simply fantastic value for money! This is a perfect lens for anyone wanting to experiment with bokah without committing too much money. The lens has a toy like feel to it but that’s not to say it won’t last if it is looked after properly. Pictures are most sharp at around 2.8 but quite acceptable across the range. The auto focus isn’t quite as responsive as my usm lens but is better than most. All in all I’m sure you won’t be disappointed with this lens for the value.

Good price, Canon quality!

Quick delivery by Amazon! Have really enjoyed using this lens on the Canon M50 through the Canon adapter (also available through Amazon). Due to the crop factor this turns into an 80mm lens, good for closeups and portraits. Have really enjoyed using this lens during lowlight as well because of the amazing F/1.8. Makes lowlight on the M50 decent. The value is brilliant, at a mere £100 this is among the cheapest lenses Canon will sell, but the quality is still there. Despite the low price-tag this lens feels solid to hold and is a joy to use. The only reason it doesn’t get five stars is that I’ve found some images to be slightly soft and not as sharp as I would have liked, but perhaps this is simply mine and not a widespread issue. It does help to not shoot at f/1.8 though, and maybe go for f/2.5 or the like in an attempt to increase sharpness.

Great quality lens for the price and an essential addition to the stock camera lenses

Great lens addition to my admittedly ageing Canon 550d. For the price I wish I’d bought it years ago with family candid/portrait photos coming out sharper and more aesthetically pleasing with the shallow depth of field compared to the stock/factory provided lenses.Do note that the nifty fifty on a non full frame camera (such as the 550d) is slightly too much for close up photography. For an equivalent naked eye match you are probably better with a 30mm but check your cameras crop factor to be sure.

An indispensable addition to your camera arsenal

This is a classic purchase for those wanting to take a small step further in to their photography and to broaden their lens options beyond a standard kit lens (often supplied with your dSLR camera). If you want to purchase a second or third lens (even if just keeping it to a trinity of 3 lenses, a tele and a versatile zoom lens in the middle range), then this could be the right one. This 'nifty fifty' is cheap and offers loads of value for money, especially in terms of sharp focus and bukeh (the blurred look you get with professional lenses).Given its focal range (50mm) which offers you close to normal eye vision (assuming you have a uncropped sensor), you could use the lens for portraits, close ups and details and street photography. The consensus is that this is one of the best editions of this classic, old time lens, and better value for money than the equivalent f1.4 or even f1.2 that cost a disproportionate amount more.Unless you need quite a wide angle or a long reach, you can't go wrong with this lens and it's a well worth addition to your camera bag.

Great lens that takes professional looking photographs

If you want to get your subject highly in focus whilst other features remain blurry this is the lens for you. To do this you need a lens with a low f stop. This has and f stop of 1.8 which is not the lowest but it's fairly low. It's good for taking close up shots of nature, flowers insects etc, also good for portraits. I think at the price it is well worth it for the level of image I have got out of it.

Outstanding lense for talking head videos

We used this lens to film talking heads with the 250D and it worked a treat. As it is a fixed lens you do need to stand pretty far back from your subject, but this was a real positive for us as it meant the camera wasn't in the speakers face making them nervous. The crisp footage and the amount of light that comes in is superb. Highly recommended for videography
