Q: i bought a pair and when i use them everyone complains i sound like i'm in a bucket. Is that standard for these, or do i have a bad set?

I would go with a bad set. Both my friend and I have set that we use at work for teams and zoom calks. No issues.

I work from home, it works fine. Quality isn’t great.

I would assume it is phone independent and is based upon Bluetooth connectivity. It works great with my iPhone 13

Yes, even if wired, the microphone will work. You may have to be sure your computer has recognized both the headset and microphone. They may be separate functions.
